System Ops: Tools of the Trade
Each one of these things has a cellular transmitter in it that will send a signal when current is lost or has returned or if there is a fault detected on the wire. The signal goes to our server that turns that date into information that allows me to pinpoint where the cause of your outage is. We're installing these all over our service territory right now. We're well into the hundreds there will be thousands eventually. Also that little black ball spins around to it's orange side to tell field workers if there is an issue with the line as well.
These can be very high up in the air or in cabinets on the ground.
Another part of my job is to monitor and dispatch people to work on our gas system which is a much larger area than our electric area.
