The Cali' Experience: Wragg Fire (Lake Berryessa Area)

This is the first fire that has been close enough to have any sort of effect on us.  Last night when we were leaving to go downtown to the Davis Farmer's Market Picnic in the Park we could tell that something was not normal, the sky was overcast and the light that was making its way through was an orange-ish sometimes green-ish tinged light.  Anne and I both commented on it and it was overcast enough that I checked the weather to see if there was rain in the forecast.

As we drove over Highway I looked back and could see the thick black plume to the west and that it might be a fire but wrote it off as a trick of perspective and that perhaps the plume was really just clouds stretching to the horizon rather than smoke emanating from the ground.

It was just hard to believe that there could actually be so much cloud cover from a fire, having never experienced such a thing, but in conversation with some other Davis locals they confirmed that there was a fire started by a car accident on Highway 128 near Lake Berryessa and tha tit was around 300 acres (now at 6000 as of the time I am writing this).

By the time we left the farmers market there were small flecks of ash falling from the sky like a very slow snowfall it was somewhat surreal.

It's really too bad the area that is burning is one of the few areas that I have actually been through a few times on my motorcycle and it is truly scenic.  Like all things it will rebound but it will take time.

With the drought conditions we have going on right now it was really a matter of time, luckily so far no one has been hurt and there has only been one out-building lost.

You can read more about the fire and see some video on ABC 7 New's Website they are also the gracious providers (albeit unbeknownst to them) of these aerial photos of the fire.

The Cal-fire website has up-to-date info on the blaze.

Below are some pictures of the ash-sprinkled volt I took this morning:

Music: Active Child "1999" (New Music Video)

Still trying to unravel the symbolism/intent of the video chosen to go with the words and music.  Seems a bit cryptic but though it was released on July 1st I just found the video yesterday so it there's still time for some meaning to be found.  If you like this song check out his new album "Mercy" on one of the many outlets it is available on.  Check out the video and lyrics below and see if you an find the meaning.

[Verse 1]
I think about you all the time
Wonder if when you think of me you smile
Because from the moment we met it was out of our hands
I know

So the story goes
Man and a woman linger alone

Thinking that you're all that
Unaware of this life that we're living
Thinking that you're all that
Unaware of with this life that we're living

[Verse 2]
Tell me, do you know?
When I'm looking out, rip through soul
Looking out, rip through soul
Sit back and let the days unwind
Somewhere between now and 1999
And back in that time I was only a boy
Soon a man, jumping free
Now it's gone

So the story goes
Makes you want to lay down
With the one that you love

Thinking that you're all that
Unaware of this life that we're living
Thinking that you're all that
Unaware of with this life that we're living

Music: "Third Day of a Seven Day Binge" Video Released

This is my favorite song off of Marilyn Manson's new album, "The Pale Emperor."  I'm actually surprised that he went in this solo artist and a camera format.  But it does fit the album as a whole which focuses inward on himself than outward to the world.

Current Events: Confederate Flag Taken Down From State Capitol in South Carolina

Now the media can stop talking about the confederate flag in South Carolina. No praise, no pats on the back to the Governor or the state Representatives and Senators who voted to take it down. Doing something that should have been done years/decades ago does not merit those sorts of things.

Of Interest: New York Times "Screen Addiction Is Taking a Toll on Children"

As a new father this New York Times article: Screen Addiction Is Taking a Toll on Children, really hit home. It is a real concern already as our little girl who is not even a year old yet is very aware and very interested in the iPhones and iPads she sees in Mom and Dad's hands.

"While Internet addiction is not yet considered a clinical diagnosis here, there’s no question that American youths are plugged in and tuned out of “live” action for many more hours of the day than experts consider healthy for normal development. And it starts early, often with preverbal toddlers handed their parents’ cellphones and tablets to entertain themselves when they should be observing the world around them and interacting with their caregivers."

This hit home with me because I can see this in myself already how is it possible that as a person who spends 12 hour shifts staring at screens that I would have any desire to do more of it once I get home?  Clearly this is something that I need to work on myself before I can ever hope to be a good example for our daughter.  I've started by deleting all social media related apps off my iPhone as there is no reason that I need to have these distractions at my fingertips.  It's a start but I think there is much more work to do.

Found Coolness: Nintendo PlayStation

Apparently the Sony PlayStation was developed out of spite after Nintendo backed out of a deal with them to build these!
